SM Krishna has passed away, prompting the Karnataka government to announce a public holiday on Wednesday.

 


The government of Karnataka has announced a public holiday for all educational institutions and government offices across the state on Wednesday, in tribute to former Chief Minister SM Krishna (92), who passed away in the early hours of Tuesday. The final rites for the esteemed leader will take place in Maddur, his hometown, on Wednesday.

The Karnataka government has declared a three-day period of state mourning in honor of the esteemed politician and former Chief Minister S M Krishna. During this time, all public entertainment activities are prohibited throughout the state, and the national flag will be displayed at half-mast on all government premises.

S M Krishna had been experiencing health issues related to aging and had been hospitalized several times. The arrangements for his final rites, to be conducted with full state honors, are being overseen by his family member and Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar.

Condolences from PM Modi

In the meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to S M Krishna's family. In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “Shri SM Krishna Ji was an exceptional leader, respected by individuals from diverse backgrounds. He dedicated himself to enhancing the lives of others. His tenure as Chief Minister of Karnataka is fondly remembered, especially for his emphasis on infrastructural development. Shri SM Krishna Ji was also an avid reader and thinker.”

PM Modi further noted that he had the privilege of meeting S M Krishna on numerous occasions and will treasure those memories. “I have had many opportunities to engage with Shri SM Krishna Ji over the years, and I will always hold those interactions dear. I am profoundly saddened by his passing. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” concluded PM Modi.
