Apple has released iOS 18.2, which introduces the first significant features of Apple Intelligence and includes 21 security updates that iPhone users are encouraged to implement immediately.
For many iPhone users, the arrival of iOS 18.2 may serve as a compelling reason to transition to iOS 18, particularly given the security enhancements included in this update. The iOS 18.2 upgrade addresses critical vulnerabilities in the iPhone Kernel and WebKit, the framework that supports the Safari browser, as well as providing patches for security flaws that could potentially enable an attacker to execute unauthorized code on the device.
The launch of iOS 18.2 coincides with Apple's decision to discontinue the option for users to opt out of upgrading to iOS 18.
In addition to iOS 18.2, Apple has also made available iOS 17.7.3 for users with older devices, which addresses a total of 14 vulnerabilities. However, it is important to note that the range of compatible devices for this update is significantly limited compared to earlier iOS 17 releases; iOS 17.7.3 is compatible only with the iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and iPad 6th generation.
What Changes Have Been Made in iOS 18.2?
Apple provides limited information regarding the fixes included in iOS 18.2, aiming to allow iPhone users ample opportunity to update before any potential exploitation of the vulnerabilities by malicious actors.
The update addresses several Kernel vulnerabilities identified as CVE-2024-54494, CVE-2024-54510, and CVE-2024-44245. Notably, the latter could enable an application to trigger unexpected system shutdowns or compromise Kernel memory, as stated on Apple's support page.
